Can I Go to University at 40? Here’s Exactly How It Works

Updated 14 July 2026

Short answer: yes. There’s no upper age limit for undergraduate or postgraduate study in the UK, and no university on our books treats 40 as some kind of cut-off. What actually changes as a mature applicant isn’t whether you’re allowed in, it’s what the university is looking for, and how student finance works out for you.

What "mature student" actually means

In UK admissions, a mature student is simply anyone starting an undergraduate course aged 21 or over, or a postgraduate course after a break from study. That’s it, it’s an administrative category, not a judgement. In practice it means your application gets read differently: less weight on school exam results, more weight on relevant work experience, existing qualifications, and a clear, specific reason for wanting the course now.

What universities look for instead of A-levels

  • Relevant work experience, several years in a related field can substitute for formal entry qualifications on many courses.
  • Existing Level 3 qualifications, an old BTEC, Access to HE Diploma, or equivalent still counts, even if it’s a decade old.
  • A clear reason for applying now, admissions tutors read motivation statements from mature applicants far more closely than personal statements from school leavers.
  • Evidence you can study alongside your existing commitments, work, childcare, or care responsibilities factored into a realistic study mode (full-time, part-time, or blended).

Age has no bearing on your student finance entitlement for undergraduate study, the Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan are available regardless of age. The one exception is the Postgraduate Master’s Loan, which has slightly different rules once you’re over 60. We break down every funding route by age band in our student finance guide.

The three questions to ask yourself first

1. What’s the course actually for? A career change, a promotion, or a subject you’ve wanted to study properly for years are all legitimate, but be specific. "I want to move from support work into a psychology-registered role" reads very differently to an admissions tutor than "I’ve always liked psychology."

2. Can you commit to the study mode realistically? Full-time isn’t the only option. Several of our partner universities run part-time and blended routes built around people with jobs and families, not against them.

3. Have you checked what you’re eligible for, both academically and financially? This is the step most people skip, and it’s the one that removes the most anxiety. It takes about five minutes.

What happens once you apply

This is where the standard route usually slows mature applicants down, generic agencies are paid on volume, so a 45-year-old applicant with real experience gets processed at the same pace, and often behind the same queue, as everyone else. Fuchures only prioritises applicants who are genuinely qualified, which is why we can move applications up to 12 times faster: there’s no queue of unsuitable applicants sitting in front of yours.

Once you’re matched to a course, an adviser handles the application on your behalf, and stays in touch through to enrolment, and beyond it, through careers and placement support once you’re studying.
